Butte County Groundwater Nitrate Study-Butte County Division of Environmental Health
Butte County |
|
The Chico Urban Area Nitrate Compliance Plan (May 2000) was prepared in response to the contamination of groundwater in the Chico Urban Area by nitrate and the subsequent issuance of septic tank Prohibition Order No. 90-126 adopted by the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) in April 1990. This Prohibition Order affected approximately 30,000 residents on 10,000 parcels that rely on septic tanks, and represented nearly 12,000 dwelling units. Hanover installed eight new monitoring wells and conducted sampling and analyses for up to 40 wells in the shallow aquifer as part of the Chico Urban Area Nitrate Compliance Program. |

Landfill Monitoring and Compliance, Highway 70 Industrial Park (Former Louisiana Pacific Corporation)
Oroville |
|
The former Louisiana Pacific Corporation Landfill operated four waste management units (WMU) for discharge of “nonhazardous solid waste” generated by the adjacent sawmill. Impoundment ponds historically received contact water from the area of active filling and leachate from the WMUs for containment and evaporation. Hanover performed monthly, quarterly, and annual sampling and reporting in accordance with Waste Discharge Requirements for the site. |

Former Berkeley Brass Foundry, Lead Contamination Assessment & Remediation, Argos Corp. |
|
Decontamination of building and site at a former foundry building that was found to contain over 100-tons of contaminated process materials. Hanover staff supervised the collection of the contaminated materials, washing of the entire structure, collection of all contaminated wash water and disposal of all contaminated materials to USPCI facility in Utah . Subsequent to de-contamination of the building, additional sampling was conducted to confirm completion of the abatement. |

Hanover's Senior Geologist, Steve Kampfen acted as project geologist and field team leader to identify contaminant migration pathways at a petroleum release site located on Beale Air Force Base, CA. Mr. Kampfen built a three dimensional cross-section of fracture plains based on down-hole geophysical surveys. Low-flow sampling techniques were used to correlate migratory pathways based on vertical profiling of the water column. Recommendations of remedial system design, well array expansion , and low-flow sampling were presented to the Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) and the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE). Upon review and discussion, the recommendations were accepted and implemented.
